Continual Monitoring, Research and Advocacy carried out by the organization to reinforce the process was ensured through the organization’s own monitoring tools like ‘Darpan’ (an innovative tool to empower the community to monitor the day-to-day activities of the school), ‘Sandhan’ (tool to monitor enrolment and attendance of children), ‘Samrudhi’ (an innovative quality package as a more advanced methodology of training guidelines), regular ‘reality checks’, consultations, campaigns and pressure groups, and through ‘Education Watch’ (citizens’ forum to monitor quality ECE and elementary education).

To bring about relevance, quality and efficacy of elementary education in the context of the needs and convenience of the learners, CYSD steers the citizenry process to bring together educationists, teachers, civil society organizations (CSOs), the media, government functionaries and others who are interested in improving the quality of elementary education in Odisha.

Master trainers were equipped and streamlined into the process at the three District Resource Centres in Koraput, Sundergarh and Keonjhar, providing them further hand-holding and other capacity building inputs). The master trainers gained thematic competence on the management of communities and cadre building, a functional literacy on the quality package and on monitoring and evaluation of Education Watch Groups for the cadres.

Strategic linkages to mainstream education like imparting education in local tribal language, organise extra-curricular activities and provide certificates of merit on completion of fifth grade, were weaved into the warm blanket of education. The trainers were adequately equipped with knowledge and focus on classroom transactions, syllabus, development of innovative Teaching-Learning Materials using local resources, topics on science, mathematics and child-friendly school context and inclusive education through an action-based research methodology based on local-skills, materials and methods, to ensure innovative and quality education.

Reality Checks of Elementary Schools: Reality check elementary schools is performed by a team of experts facilitated by CYSD to explore the real situation and to highlight the issues based on a format developed in Oriya and disseminated to the Gram Panchayat and Village level Education Watch Groups. The findings are shared in the different consultations & workshops facilitated CYSD and are presented to the district administrations, for addressing issues and refining strategies.

Pressure groups: Pressure Groups is an initiative taken up to influence policy level change affecting primary education, providing media with relevant information to disseminate and sensitise citizens on issues affecting primary education.

Education Watch: Education Watch is a state level citizens’ forum to monitor quality primary education through awareness generation, research and advocacy. It speaks about the elementary education scenario and recognizes loopholes and shortcomings in the current educational system while recommending a set of measures.

Education Watch is the result of this citizens’ initiative which seeks to strengthen the on-going efforts in the state to improve the quality of ECE and elementary education. The Education Watch group has been conducting action research and public consultations at various levels to map out and establish the realities of elementary education in the State.

Resource Centers:

The State Resource Centers (SRCs) prepare a comprehensive concept note on community monitoring to reach to a larger mass working on the aspects of community monitoring and quality elementary education specifically in context to tribal girls by preparing.  The District Resource Centers (DRCs) extend outreach of education initiatives through rallies, workshops and consultations on education plans, tribal pedagogy, quality learning resources, partnership building. The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) developed by CYSD as a successful transition programme strategy to demonstrate the potential success of MT based ECE transition in tribal areas, provided joyful learning opportunities to the poor disadvantaged tribal children through play, stories, action songs and dances. Personal hygiene and sanitation, social behavior, concept of colors and numbers, general science etc. were shared with the young kids.  more...
