Youth Power and Collective Action Shine at International Volunteers Day

The 17th International Volunteers Day, themed “Solidarity Through Volunteering,” was observed with great enthusiasm at CYSD, Bhubaneswar. The event brought together young volunteers from the National Service Scheme (NSS) and representatives from more than ten organizations, creating a vibrant platform for reflection on the role of volunteerism in social transformation. During the event, 15 state-level volunteers were felicitated for their outstanding contributions.

Senior Advisor to the Election Commissioner, Dr. Bhagaban Prakash, lauded four decades of sustained youth engagement, recalling how young volunteers played a decisive role during India’s freedom movement, particularly in the non-cooperation era. His address underlined the enduring power of voluntary action in shaping democratic values.Sujit Mohapatra, Founder of Bokul Foundation, described a volunteer as someone who serves without recognition, guided only by empathy.

Shri P.K. Sahoo, Co-founder of CYSD, highlighted youth as the backbone of society and drew inspiration from iconic figures such as Gopabandhu Das and Ramadevi, who exemplified selfless service. Educationalist Dr. Biswamohan Jena spoke on internal volunteerism, while Dr. Abha Mishra, Odisha Head of UNDP, emphasized that everyday volunteerism begins with individual responsibility and compassion.

Dr. Jagadananda, Co-founder of CYSD, stressed the role of volunteers in addressing key state issues such as disasters, education, climate change, and migration, linking volunteerism directly to nation-building. Group discussions on climate action, disaster management, peace, harmony, and mental health enriched the dialogue.

The celebration concluded with a powerful moral play on drug abuse among youth, followed by a pledge, stall visits, and a collective expression of gratitude, reinforcing the enduring strength of volunteer-led change.
