In a significant move to enhance transparency and community participation in implementation of its programmes, CYSD has conducted comprehensive social audits across 34 Gram Panchayats in three districts of Odisha - Malkangiri, Koraput, and Bolangir. Involving over 550 stakeholders including PRI members, government officials, SHG members, and the community people, the audits assessed the impact of development initiatives in early childhood care, livelihoods, and natural resource management. It aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and need-based planning by providing a platform to the communities to review the entire process including beneficiary selection, programme ,performance, and financial management.
In Malkangiri, the community highlighted the success of the creche programme for children
aged 7 months to 3 years, which has improved nutrition and allowed parents to pursue livelihoods while ensuring older siblings attend school. In Dasmantpur, villagers emphasized increased household income through better irrigation, livestock rearing, and promotion of cash crops. Meanwhile, in Titilagarh, stakeholders acknowledged notable improvements in the livelihoods of the vulnerable households including distressed migrants.
Through open discussions and poster-based disclosures, community members actively participated in validating information, raising questions, and sharing feedback. The audits not only reinforced institutional transparency but also fostered trust between communities and implementing agencies.
Key recommendations from the social audits included establishing permanent creche facilities, strengthening convergence with government schemes, and expanding focus areas such as access to drinking water and market linkages for vegetables. Participants also suggested adopting audio-visual communication tools to enhance outreach and engagement. Community leaders and the officials recognized social audit as a vital mechanism for ensuring organizational transparency and promoting inclusive decision-making. CYSD’s efforts demonstrate the importance of participatory governance in driving sustainable development and community empowerment at the grassroots level. The process has strengthened community ownership of development initiatives, improved programme effectiveness, and ensured that interventions remain responsive to local needs.
